Each Ryman village is named in honour of a Kiwi or Aussie trailblazer: Anthony Wilding, Lady Diana Isaac, Evelyn Page. They pushed further and set the bar high for others to aspire to. In creating communities that challenge the expectations of ageing, Ryman villages are also setting the bar high. They’re demonstrating that a retirement lifestyle brimming with new experiences, connections and fulfilment is something we should aspire to. Our Kiwi and Aussie namesakes represent the measure of inspiration, while Ryman villages represent the measure of retirement living.
Sir Patrick Hogan is best known as one of this country’s most successful horse breeders.
Born in 1939 in Rotorua, Sir Patrick quickly took to life on the family farm. As a young man, he raised award winning dairy calves before moving on to parade yearlings at the prestigious Trentham sales.
With a passion for horse breeding, Sir Patrick, and his wife, purchased land at Discombe Road in Cambridge in 1976. Soon after, they invested in a lively foundation stallion, one that went on to create history – Sir Tristram.
The reputation of his stable Cambridge Stud continued to grow to international acclaim. Soon a second generation of winners was sired from Sir Tristram’s son, Zabeel, adding to Sir Patrick’s continued success and firmly cementing his legacy as the King of Cambridge thoroughbreds.
Sir Patrick won New Zealand Breeder of the Year on multiple occasions and was knighted for his services to thoroughbred breeding and racing in 1999. Sir Patrick also held the position of President of the New Zealand Breeders Association and the Cambridge Jockey Club during his lifetime. He passed away in early 2023.
