Ryman Pioneers Freedom

Frances Hodgkins village offers living choices to suit everyone, so residents can live the way they want and blaze their own trails. Our apartments are light and spacious, with clean lines and a clever open plan design layout that provides an easy flow throughout.

If down the track you need more support, we offer assisted-living apartments and care options. That freedom and flexibility is empowering for residents and knowing care can be dialled up as needed means, quite simply, ‘no worries’. It's all part of what we like to call the Ryman Difference

Our pioneering approach to retirement living includes resident-friendly terms designed to protect you and your family. Our base weekly fee is fixed for the entire time you occupy your apartment*, and our deferred management fee is capped at 20 percent – one of the lowest in the retirement sector.

These are just some of the ways we’re pioneering a new way of living for a new retirement generation.

*Some conditions apply.

Enjoy all the upsides of living independently in a Ryman village. Easy living, security, plus a huge bonus – the support of a vibrant village community.

Assisted-living apartments come with support you can count on. A chef-prepared meal, housekeeping – it's great for you and reassuring for your family.

It's hard to put your finger on why Ryman villages just feel different. For the inside knowledge, check out our guide.

Pioneers Care

Care is not an ‘add on’ at a Ryman village, it is built into the fabric of our villages from the very beginning. It’s comforting for couples and friends to know they can still be near each other even if their health needs are different.

Frances Hodgkins care centre offers the best of resthome care. Like all aspects of our villages, we constantly look for ways to improve both the care we provide and the innovation behind it. Care is customised using our myRyman care app and residents love the food in our seasonal Delicious menu, which is prepared fresh on site by village chefs.

Frances Hodgkins is one of over 91 percent of Ryman villages that have been awarded 4-year certification by the Ministry of Health. It’s recognised as the ‘gold star’ standard in care.

Personal attention, warmth and building trusting relationships are all crucial to the customised care we provide at our care centres.

Pioneering is part of who we are

That’s why each Ryman village is named after a Kiwi or Aussie trailblazer. Anthony Wilding, Lady Diana Isaac, Evelyn Page to name a few. They lived with passion and purpose, they pushed further, they went beyond the ordinary. That’s exactly what we strive to do every day at Ryman. To pioneer a new way of living, for a new retirement generation.

Frances Hodgkins (1869–1947)

Frances Hodgkins is one of New Zealand’s finest expat artists and was considered one of Britain’s leading artists at the time of her death in 1947. A key figure in British Modernism in the later stages of her career and a highly considered member of Britain’s avant-garde society, Hodgkins lived and breathed experimental artistry.

In 1893, the 24-year-old painter began studying under Italian artist Girolamo Nerli. Two years later, she won the New Zealand Academy of Arts prize for her watercolour painting Head of an Old Woman. During her study and short art teaching career in New Zealand, Hodgkins developed a reputation as a passionate artist with a vivacious style.

Among her many accomplishments and recognitions, a University of Otago fellowship was established in her honour in 1962. Abroad, Hodgkins was the first woman to instruct at the Colarossi Academy in Paris where she also founded the School for Water Colour.

Letters of Frances Hodgkins by Linda Gill, published in 1993, sheds light on the inspiration, fortunes, people, and landscapes Hodgkins encountered in her life. The Penguin Modern Painters book series published in 1948 includes Frances Hodgkins by Myfanwy Evans. The two were the only female artist and author published in the series.
