Deciding how you or a loved one will be supported later in life is seldom just a financial decision. For many people, weighing up in-home care vs assisted living cost also involves emotional and practical considerations such as level of independence, comfort, safety, and the desire to reduce pressure on family.

  • A grand opening for Kevin Hickman Village

‘A beautiful village that epitomises everything which is great about Ryman’, was how the family of Kevin Hickman described the village named after him at the official Grand Opening held yesterday.

Residents packed out the stunning village lounge, which overlooks the Riccarton Racecourse, alongside wife of the late Kevin, Joanna Hickman, his children, step-children, grandchildren and siblings - one of whom is also a resident - to celebrate the milestone event in the village journey.

  • Delirium vs dementia: understanding the difference

Sudden acute confusion in an older person can be alarming. Is it dementia? Or is it something urgent that requires an immediate medical response?

Understanding the difference between delirium vs dementia is important, because early recognition can improve recovery, safety, and wellbeing.

  • Residents ‘move their butts’ for bowel cancer

The Hillary Hikers have embraced Bowel Cancer New Zealand’s Move Your Butt campaign in the best possible way – by moving their butts!

Donning the distinctive bright purple and orange t-shirts, the 20 or so residents representing Edmund Hillary Village’s walking group drew plenty of smiles and thumbs ups as they marched from Mission Bay to Kohimarama on a sunny Monday morning in February.

  • Raman puts connection at the heart of care

At Ryman Healthcare, person-centred care isn’t just a policy - it’s a long-held belief that everything we do should be ‘good enough for Mum and Dad’.

That idea still shapes how residents are cared for across Ryman villages today.

At Bruce McLaren Village, Special Care Unit Coordinator Raman Kaur brings that philosophy to life through genuine connection, empathy, and a deep respect for each individual.
