How to use Zoom

April 08, 2020

What to do before the call:

  • Install Zoom at least an hour before the video call. https://zoom.us/
  • Place a test call to make sure the video and audio are working correctly. Follow this link to join a test call https://zoom.us/test.
  • If you are making the video call on a smartphone or a tablet with WiFi and cellular, please ensure you are connected to the WiFi, as the video call could use up your mobile data fast.
  • If you are connecting to the Internet via WiFi, ensure that you have a strong WiFi connection.
  • Find a quiet room, don’t have a radio or television playing in the background.
  • Jot down some bits of news about mutual friends and family - these come in handy during lulls in the conversation.
  • Avoid having back-lighting, for example, don’t position yourself so that there is a window behind you. If this can’t be helped, make sure to draw the curtains.
  • If you are the only person calling from your side, use headphones as this can help you hear clearer and cuts down on the chance of an echo being heard on the other side of the video call.

During the video call

  • Take turns to talk, especially if there are multiple family members on one side of the video call. It can be difficult to make out what is being said if there are more than one person talking at a time.
  • Speak slowly and clearly, it might be harder to hear on the other side through the tablet speaker.
  • Face the camera when speaking.
