Ryman Healthcare wins gold medal for customer service
Fifth Quality Service award for retirement village operator

Ryman Healthcare has been voted the top retirement village operator in New Zealand for its exceptional customer service.

Ryman won the gold medal in the 2020 Reader’s Digest Quality Service Award as the retirement village operator that Kiwis believe best demonstrates excellent customer service.

The company also won the top award in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Reader’s Digest says the awards, now in their sixth year, celebrate many examples of businesses delivering consistently excellent customer success.

Ryman Healthcare chief executive Gordon MacLeod says Ryman’s 5,700 staff each year contribute to delivering high quality care. They show what extraordinary results can be achieved in a care and service-based industry.

The gold medal showed that Ryman’s team approach continued to pay dividends. The staff worked hard but with an attention to detail when providing care for residents. Everyone within the Ryman world made sure that the residents and families remained top of mind each and every day.

“We’re a care company and it means a lot when we’re recognised by the awards. We’re also happy to hear valued comments from those that live in our villages about how well they’re looked after,” he said.

The quality service awards offer a great guide for Kiwi consumers keen to know which businesses are nailing customer service, Reader’s Digest says.

Editor in chief Louise Waterson says the awards recognise how exemplary customer service can be delivered and how people should be treated.

Reader’s Digest commissions the awards annually, commissioning Catalyst Market Research to survey New Zealanders’ opinions of a range of service providers.

A total of 40 categories were surveyed with 1,500 New Zealanders, of a mixed demographic, asked to rate their opinions of a range of service providers.

Those surveyed were first asked which companies they previously had experience with, so that a brand list - reflective of today’s market - could be established. Data was then captured to establish which companies provide the highest levels of customer service.

The survey offers 40 gold (plus 40 silver) recommendations with categories as varied as retirement villages, insurances loyalty cards, campervan rentals, department stores and internet providers.

It’s the sixth consecutive year for these awards, and Ryman intends to keep giving exceptional customer service in the years ahead.
