It may have been a surprise to Bob Scott’s Asharif Rahman winning the Ryman Leader of the Year 2021, but to his colleagues and village manager it certainly wasn’t.
Ash’s dedication at the Petone village has earned him the respect of fellow team members, residents and family members.
Ryman leaders are a dedicated highly capable team who ensure Ryman is a great place to work and a great place for residents to live and who empower their team members by showing kindness and support.
Ash has all these Ryman qualities. As clinical manager he strives for excellence and quality care which is good enough for Mum and Dad.
Ash came to New Zealand in 2012 from India to make New Zealand his home and like everything Ash does, it was a well-researched and considered choice.
He calls this “his Ryman journey.”
His first goal was to complete his competency assessment as a registered nurse (RN) in New Zealand.
He achieved this while working as a caregiver at Yvette Williams village in Dunedin. He loved working there and it was this work that planted the seed for Ash to decide he would like to pursue a career in aged care.
Luckily Ash likes to travel, as he then become a roaming registered nurse with Ryman. This gave him an insight into the Ryman way, working in villages throughout the country.
Finally, in 2014 he got the chance to settle in Wellington at Malvina Major village where he worked for three years as an RN and then unit coordinator for a three-month maternity cover, after which he applied and was accepted as Bob Scott’s hospital unit coordinator.
Three years on he was welcomed as Bob Scott’s clinical manager. Immediately they prepared for an audit working meticulously to ensure everything was up to date and the reward was a gold standard four-year certification. “This was a big achievement for us as we worked really hard to get it,” he recalls.
Ash is very happy in his role at Bob Scott and attributes his win to the excellent support he has received from village manager Heidi, regional operations manager Jenny, the clinical team at Ryman and the great team at Bob Scott. “The experience I had as a roaming RN also gave me a good understanding of ‘the Ryman way’ and I love the way. He also pays tribute to his family in NZ and India.

BB Award nominees Ash
“It has been wonderful – the growth and opportunity I have been given is something I would wish for anyone [joining Ryman].”
And in his quiet, unassuming way Ash smiles, “I am extremely thankful to all the people who nominated me. Ryman look after their staff really well and it’s a very good place to work."
