Ryman Healthcare COVID update - 22 October

Dear residents and family members,

The Government has announced a range of changes to the COVID-19 alert system which will come into force once each District Health Board reaches double vaccination targets of 90%.

There is no set date for the new traffic light system to be implemented, which moves us from an elimination strategy to a protection strategy – in other words – living with COVID.

We are digesting exactly what the changes will mean for us.

What is clear is that our goals remain the same – keeping everyone safe in our villages and being ready to go if we get any COVID-19 infections.

We are fully prepared, we have full COVID-19 infection control plans in place, and we will continue to take a cautious approach. We know you support this.

The great news for us is that we have extremely high vaccination rates among our residents – above 98% – and vaccinations are now mandatory for all our team.

We also know from our entry declarations than more than 90% of people entering the villages each day are vaccinated, which gives us great comfort that the message about protecting our residents has been spread far and wide. And from December 1 all of our contractors will also need to be vaccinated before they can visit one of our villages.

We have also been lobbying for a booster vaccine programme for our residents to be rolled out, and we will be ready to go when it is.

The wellbeing of everyone remains our priority. We encourage you to get in touch if you need any help, no matter how big or small the issue.

There’s a wellness workshop Tuesday, psychologist Nigel Latta on Wednesday and a fascinating talk on Antarctic exploration on Thursday – full details are included below.

Here’s a reminder of the measures we have in place:

Our care centres are open to visitors, but we have special arrangements for non-vaccinated visitors to our care residents.

As an extra safeguard against the Delta variant, we require anyone who is unvaccinated who wishes to visit their loved ones in our care centres to contact the Village Manager so a suitable COVID-safe visit can be arranged.

This will include:

  • The visit occurring in a dedicated and separate space outside of the care centre
  • Our team providing full PPE for the visitor to wear
  • Shortened visits only, and
  • Our team cleaning the visiting area between visits.

We also respectfully request that people do not bring in under 12s to the care centre until we start to see the number of vaccinations in the general population increase.

Of course, if you are wanting to visit a resident in palliative care, we will work with you to allow this to happen. Once again, please talk to the Village Manager.

Please be aware that you may be asked for evidence of vaccination when making your entry declaration.

This is a high risk time for us while we wait for better vaccination rates in the community but we want to assure you that we will make every effort to provide a COVID-safe visit while we continue to look for ways to keep our residents safe.

Otherwise, for anyone who is vaccinated who wishes to visit a resident in care, the process remains unchanged. This includes having a temperature check and wearing a mask, with visits limited to two people at a time.

Visitors to our serviced apartment residents are also required to check in, have a temperature check and wear a mask.

This is because our serviced apartments are positioned close to our care centres and many serviced apartment residents receive care services from our team.

Mask wearing

The most common query we are getting is around mask wearing. The requirements for masks for our serviced apartments and independent residents are:

  • Residents are asked to wear masks when inside the building in any public or communal spaces – ie: our village centres.
  • However, masks can be removed for eating, drinking and exercise. So you can take your mask off for Triple A and when eating or drinking.
  • You are encouraged to wear a mask when you are outside your home, when you cannot maintain a 2m distance from others.

Compulsory check-ins

The Government has introduced mandatory scanning or check-ins in New Zealand so that everyone’s movements can be easily traced in case of a COVID-19 outbreak.

This means everyone must check in when they enter our village centres either by using the Tracer App or manually.

Residents must also check-in when visiting other places outside the village, including public venues such as restaurants. Don’t panic if you do not have a smart phone – businesses are required to provide forms to do this manually.

It may be a good idea to keep a personal diary of where you have been and when, including who has visited in your village home.

We are what we eat! So on Tuesday October 26 at 2pm we will hold a special seminar on Food and Diet – with insights on how the food we eat affects pull the curtain up on a fun, social and creative online drama class with the Third Act. No, lines to learn – no acting experience necessary, just click in and have fun!


Join us on Wednesday October 27 at 10.30am for a morning with clinical psychologist and TV host Nigel Latta.

Nigel will talk us through his career highlights in his usual entertaining manner. You can rely on Nigel to give you something to think about!


On Thursday October 28 at 2pm please join Nigel Watson, executive director of the Antarctic Heritage Trust, for a talk on Antarctic exploration. Nigel is a leading expert on Antarctic history as well as an author and adventurer, and Ryman has been a long-term supporter of the work of the trust.

COVID-19 symptoms

Symptoms to watch out for include:

  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • New cough
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever/chills
  • Loss of taste and smell
  • Body aches/sore muscles
  • Runny nose/sneezing
  • Breathlessness
  • Diarrhoea
  • Fatigue
  • A high temperature (at least 37.5˚C)
