New mothers and mothers without family in Wellington or in New Zealand took the initiative to connect through Facebook to establish some interest from other mothers to reach out to their community.
There was no hesitation and a lot of excitement when the mothers group contacted Rita Angus Retirement Village. Their first meeting as a group was at the village with our care centre residents.
A growing group of mothers pushing strollers and juggling babies and bags arrived.
We all watched the babies and toddlers explore our lounge or roll on the matt while others went around the room to meet and cuddle our residents individually.
Everyone had their own stories and memories to share with each other. Faces lit up, cuddles were had and even tears were shed…and it wasn’t just from the residents or the babies but something strange happened to all our staff and senior staff that day lots of clucky oohing and awwing.
Since then we have been meeting every week on Thursdays at 10:30am in a relaxing environment. With special connections made between residents and babies.
