A masterful bare foot kicking display marked the unveiling of the name of Ryman’s new Petone village.
Named after Bob Scott, Ryman managing director Simon Challies thought it would be appropriate to have a bare foot kicking display on the day to mark the event.
Allan Hewson, former All Black fullback and kicking supremo, was coached by Bob Scott as a youngster and spent many hours talking rugby with Bob at his Petone menswear store.
Allan was happy to step up and – ignoring arthritis in his left big toe – took his shoe off and landed two place kicks bare foot from a good 30m out.
Andy Leslie, former All Black captain, was also at the naming ceremony to honour Bob and to evaluate Allan’s kicking technique.
Allan Hewson said he would never forget visiting the shop with his dad Roy Hewson, another Petone rugby stalwart.
“The shop was really the centre of the rugby universe in those days with Bob and Andy there. They used to have a small lunchroom and they would crowd in there for hours talking rugby.’’
Andy Leslie said Bob was a great character and friend.
“He was a wonderful rugby player and he gave an awful lot to the Petone community. I think he’d be flattered – it is a lovely honour for him.’’
