Bob Owens Kindness Award Winner

Sandra Hodson loves a lot of things about her job, but seeing other staff study and pass their qualifications always counts as a highlight.

The education coordinator and senior caregiver at Bob Owens Retirement Village won the village’s kindness award for her consistently compassionate approach to residents as well as other staff.

Her colleagues were particularly impressed with the lengths she went to help others get through their ACE qualifications.

“I often work through my lunch hour to help them out with their paperwork. They’re busy people with families and getting a qualification means extra work, but I like to see the way it boosts their confidence. It’s worth it.’’

Sandra has worked for Ryman Healthcare since 2007, firstly at Julia Wallace in Palmerston North before transferring to Tauranga when Bob Owens opened.

Her motto – instilled in her since childhood – is to always treat others as she would like to be treated herself.

A highlight of winning the award was the reaction of her residents. “They were really chuffed for me which was nice. There were plenty of hugs and kisses.’’

Her colleagues described her as a highly skilled carer who “moved at the speed of a bullet’’ and always put her residents first.

“Of course our residents are what it is all about,’’ she says. “Making them as happy and as comfortable as you can in their environment is what we do.’’
