It is never hard to find Virginia Bryan when she’s at work. Just listen to the gales of laughter from residents and you’ll usually find Virginia at the centre of the fun.

The Jean Sandel activities co-ordinator was a popular nomination from her fellow staff members for a number of reasons, not least of which was her ability to get a laugh out of anyone.

“I guess I’m a bit cheeky,’’ Virginia says.

“I push the boundaries a bit – but it is a nice push.’’

Virginia was not nominated for her cheekiness, but for her kind approach to residents and staff alike.

Or, in the words of one of her colleagues, Virginia was “… always kind and caring, will do anything for you, is great at her job and, more importantly, the residents love her.’’

Virginia joined Jean Sandel shortly after the village opened back in 2009. “I love working with older people and I love the vibe of the village,’’ she says. “There’s a great core of staff who have been here from the start and we have a great rapport with each other and the residents.’’

She was surprised to be nominated for the award because she has had to reduce her hours down to just one day a week. She also thought there were plenty of other examples of kind people in the village.

She loves her job, which she approaches using a philosophy that she was taught as a youngster.“Kindness means to be treated as you would like to be treated yourself and to treat everyone the same. It also means to give whatever you can freely.’’

For her that meant giving her time and energy to making her residents happy.

She says she’s had great feedback from staff and residents alike and will use her prize to shout her family out to dinner.
