Hello, my name is Joy Thornton. I recently celebrated my 90th birthday with family and friends from Australia and both North and South Islands. We held the celebration in the atrium here at Princess Alexandra, and it was a lot of fun.
On the 25th of January, I received my birthday present from my family – a flight in a Tiger Moth aircraft, flown by Scott MacDonald of Wakpukurau. I wore my husband’s wartime ‘dog tags’ and I found the flight thrilling, if a little cold.
In 2013, while visiting the Mandeville Vintage Aircraft Museum in Southland, I had commented that I would love a flight in a Tiger Moth, as it was the aircraft my husband learned to fly in, back in 1940 before he was posted overseas to fly with RAF Bomber Command. We met in 1942, when I was in the WAAF and worked in the operations section of Bomber Command Headquarters at High Wycombe, west of London.
But that is another story…
