Dame Kiri Te Kanawa visits

The soprano legend and New Zealand icon popped into the Gisborne village she lent her name to on March 15 while she was in her hometown for a performance.

Residents and staff queued up to say hello to the opera legend who spent an hour touring the village.

Dame Kiri said she was delighted to be home in Gisborne, and to see the village she opened in 2012 was thriving.

As well as touring the village - which has more than doubled in size since she opened it in April 2012 - she chatted with residents and was entertained by children from a nearby preschool.

Residents and staff alike were delighted with her visit and spontaneous applause greeted her as she arrived and as she left.
