Ronita Prasad has talked, joked and laughed her way to winning a Kindness Award.

The senior caregiver has worked at Woodcote Retirement Village since 2009 and it is the place she calls home.

She was a popular winner, and was praised by her colleagues for her hard work and diligence as well as her friendliness.

“I’m a very talkative person and I feel very comfortable with people. I think it is my job to talk to everyone, to have fun and to make jokes as much as I can.’’

“For me kindness is all about doing small things for other people. If there is something I can do I will do it. That’s how I am.’’

When she has down time she will do things such as sewing on buttons for residents or mending clothes. It was these sort of kindnesses that won her the respect of other staff.

One said Ronita was someone who “lights up the place.’’

“She never lets us down. If you call her she will always come. She goes the extra mile and she’s always happy and smiling, she loves helping others.’’

Ronita learned the art of caring back in Fiji where she looked after her nana, who is now aged 89.

She was worried about leaving her family behind in Fiji but she needn’t have – she has a new family at Woodcote.

“I love going to work at Woodcote because that’s where my family are,’’ she says.

Her other favourite thing is passing the lessons she’s learned on to new staff, and she’s now in charge of orientation for newcomers.
