The First Woodcote Commonwealth Games

To celebrate the opening of the Glasgow Commonwealth games, here at Woodcote we all found our sporty side to hold the first Woodcote Commonwealth games! The opening ceremony included Scottish dancing performed in a slightly alternative manner by the activities co-ordinators, followed by the flag bearing ceremony led by village manager Liz Hampton.

Then we let the games commence as the Springmead Blackcats took on the Woodlands Blackbirds! Staff and residents competed in a variety of events including the egg and spoon race (well technically the golf ball and spoon event!), the three legged race and our new event which we named the chicken run race! However the residents and most of the staff opted out of the wheelbarrow race! Residents laughed and cheered on their teams and booed loudly if they lost! We then had the resident egg and spoon relay and the balloon pat relay which brought out some very competitive attitudes! The final score saw the Blackcats winning the overall events.

To recognise the games being held in Scotland many staff and residents wore tartan or blue and white, and our afternoon entertainment 'Sing and Swing' performed a variety of Scottish songs whilst three wee lassies beautifully performed traditional Scottish dances. The day was wonderfully finished off with a good cuppa and fantastic shortbread baked by our Woodcote chef Robyn Elder. It was a day thoroughly enjoyed by all!
