Roma Tarranza was walking on air the day she found out she’d won the Grace Joel Retirement Village Kindness Award.

“I told everyone not to vote for me but it felt like the best birthday of my life,’’ she says. “I feel blessed to win, I’m lucky to be working with a lot of kind people here at Grace Joel.’’

Roma is the serviced apartment coordinator at the Auckland village. She’s worked there since 2013 and loves her job.

“The best thing is the way you become a part of your residents’ lives. I treat them like they’re my family.’’

Her secret to kindness includes making sure she makes time to listen to residents.

“I think they really appreciate that I actively listen, the whole place is busy but if you give them five minutes of your time they feel very valued. You can’t just brush them off.’’

She says she sometimes gets gently scolded for staying too late at work but she can’t bear to go home thinking she’s let anyone down by not fulfilling any promises she’s made to residents.

Roma was praised by her colleagues for her hard work and dedication to her residents as well as other staff.

“She always gives 100%,’’ wrote one fan.

“She’s so caring and kind to residents, she genuinely cares about them. She’s always the first to pick up the phone or to help.’’

She says she loves working at Grace Joel with a genuinely positive staff and management team.
