GJ DJ rocks the house again

Cliff’s Christmas Classics a big hit

Christmas came early at Grace Joel last week after ‘GJ DJ’ Cliff Hart entertained residents with yet another of his wonderful musical presentations.

The long-time resident of Ryman’s St Heliers village has an extensive collection of classical music from which he regularly selects a programme to play for his fellow villagers’ enjoyment, dubbed ‘Cliff’s Classics’.

Last week’s seasonal selection of ‘Cliff’s Christmas Classics’ was followed up with the customary bubbles and mince pies (using Cliff’s own mince mix) which were served up by three of his grandchildren who came along in support.

The session kicked off with the sounds that sparked Cliff’s love affair with classical music, the ‘happy and bright’ Espana by Emmanuel Chabrier.

This was followed by the main event – a half hour selection of much-loved Christmas carols performed by various choirs.

To conclude, there was the Berlin Staatskapelle Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim at the 2017 Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.

Cliff also included in the programme Barenboim’s plea for European unity which caused controversy at the time and which Cliff predicted would be a bit of a ‘talking point’ amongst the residents.

The finale was a rousing rendition of the Staatskapelle playing Land of Hope and Glory which got everyone singing along.

Cliff admits he spends quite a bit of time getting his selections just right but is quick to add that there is an ulterior motive.

“I do enjoy doing it so it’s a bit of an ego trip really,” he laughs. “But I do think it’s time I gave up!”

This is now the fourth year that Cliff, 92, has put on his ‘last’ presentation! He admits that when his friends keep asking him when the next programme is they end up twisting his arm to do another.

“It doesn’t take much twisting though!” he says.
