Ngati Whatua Orakei elders bless Ryman site

New Ryman village gets blessing and consent

Ryman Healthcare’s new $120 million retirement village in Birkenhead has been blessed by Ngati Whatua Orakei kaumatua ahead of construction work.

The 3.2 hectare site on Rangatira Rd has been granted a resource consent and is expected to open in 2016.

It will eventually be home to more than 400 residents and will include independent apartments and dementia and hospital-level care.

Ngati Whatua Orakei kaumatua Bob Hawke, Matt Maihi and Sarah Grey blessed the site on December 18.

Bob Hawke called on God to bless the site, the project and the workers who would build it.

Matt Maihi said the blessing acknowledged Ngati Whatua Orakei’s ancestors and sanctified the land ahead of the start of building work.

“This is the beginning of the journey for you and our prayers are all about the journey ahead,’’ he said.

Ryman Healthcare managing director Simon Challies said Ngati Whatua Orakei had a deep history with the land and the company was proud to become a part of that history.

“We see it as our privilege to be able to look after the older people of Birkenhead. We’re pleased to be able to develop a new community amenity in the site, and to build a service to this community.’’

“As a proudly New Zealand company, and a company that builds communities, we want to acknowledge the local communities of the place where we establish our retirement villages.

Site works will begin at the village in early January, including excavation of the first stage. The site has been the home of a holiday lodge which is being demolished.
