Ryman's new village to be named after Gisborne's own opera diva

opera_divaRyman Healthcare’s new Gisborne retirement village will be named the “Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village”, after world-acclaimed New Zealand opera diva Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.

“We’re delighted to be naming the village after such an iconic New Zealander, and one of Gisborne’s most famous daughters”, says Ryman chief executive Simon Challies. “It is our pleasure to be able to honour Dame Kiri’s achievements.”

Gisborne Mayor Meng Foon and Gisborne City chief executive Lindsay McKenzie joined with Ryman management on-site to launch the village today. Mayor Foon has welcomed the development of the village.

“I congratulate Ryman on their commitment to this region. The $60m development will provide significant economic benefits, new employment opportunities, and provides wonderful retirement living and aged care options for our elderly.”

Mr Challies said that Ryman are very much looking forward to working together with the community to provide the people of Gisborne with a first class retirement and resthome option.

“We’ve been thrilled by the reception we have already received from the community. The Gisborne District Council have been very supportive, and we look forward to working with the District Health Board and community groups to support the elderly people of Gisborne”.

“The village is designed in Ryman Healthcare’s unique award winning style, will offer the full range of resthome, hospital and dementia care, and on completion will be home to over 300 residents.”

The Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village will be Ryman’s 22nd village, and will join the group which is well-known for its Edmund Hillary Retirement Village in Auckland, Princess Alexandra Retirement Village in Napier and Malvina Major Retirement Village in Wellington.

Ryman is a six time winner of the Australasian Aged Care Housing Awards for ‘Best Retirement Village in New Zealand’, employs more than 2000 staff, and provides home and care services to more than 4,500 elderly New Zealanders.
