Ryman’s key role in owl-themed art trail

Ryman Healthcare has become a proud sponsor of The Haier Big Hoot, a spectacular owl-themed art trail which is raising funds for the Child Cancer Foundation.

The initiative involves 47 super-sized owl sculptures decorated by New Zealand artists, and 60 owlets decorated by children, with them all coming to roost in various locations across Auckland.

The idea is to track down each owl using the trail map - available in your village or using the Big Hoot 2018 app – and collect rewards as you go.

Auckland sculptor Jeff Thomson has created the Ryman owl which landed at a secret location in Birkenhead on 3 March and will be on show until 6 May.

Nicknamed ‘The Corrugated Iron Man of Australasia’, Jeff is well-known for turning corrugated iron into artworks.

And true to form, Jeff’s ‘Tin Owl’, is made from his favourite material, making it quite different from the other painted fibreglass owls.

“I made it entirely from scratch using a manual corrugated iron roll former, or curving machine, and while it meant a lot more work for me than if I’d just painted it, it’s for a cause that I fully support and I was excited to be able to help.”

Ryman Healthcare CEO Gordon MacLeod said he was delighted Ryman is involved in The Big Hoot.

“We have always been strong supporters of the arts and this is a fantastic community-oriented event which also has a great purpose behind it, raising money to help children and their families affected by cancer.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing all our Auckland residents getting involved and supporting it too.”
