To help launch this year’s search, Ryman invited magazine editor Alice O’Connell and her team to a lavish high tea at its Bert Sutcliffe Retirement Village where residents gave them a very warm welcome.

Radio presenter Lorna Subritzky, who was the MC for the event, invited Alice to explain just why grandparents deserved to be recognised.

“With more mothers working and under so much pressure it’s grandparents who end up picking up the slack either with childcare or financially - they are the unsung heroes,” she said.

“So we need to celebrate these people and say they’re doing something wonderful.”

“We’re searching New Zealand for grandparents who give unconditional love and support on a daily basis, no matter what,” she said.

Now the annual competition had been widened to include Ryman’s 31 villages Alice was ordering in extra tissues already.

“I found it incredibly moving reading what some people have to do for their families. I literally went through a whole box of tissues reading all the entries.”

Alice said the magazine recently celebrated its 85th birthday and stories about the royal family were still amongst its most popular with readers.

That proved to be true when Lorna held a quiz for residents testing them on their knowledge of the royals, Kiwi trivia and even on some key village personalities.

Quiz winners Joyce Williams and Ken and Marie Carpendale were thrilled to pick out a few commemorative prizes in what was a very competitive contest!

Alice said this year more judges had been brought on board to choose each category winner, including the Minister for Seniors, Hon Tracey Martin, NZ Women’s Weekly Columnist and soon-to-be grandfather-of-eight, Colin Hogg, and Ryman’s own Group Sales Manager Debbie McClure, who grew up living next door to her grandparents.

“I know from first-hand experience just how special the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren can be and I’m thrilled that Ryman is involved with New Zealand Women’s Weekly to celebrate that," Debbie said.

“With so many wonderful grandparents amongst our residents alone I just know choosing the winners is going to be extremely tough – I will have my tissues at the ready too!”
