Media release – Ryman co-founder recognised in New Year’s Honours List

Ryman Healthcare co-founder and director Kevin Hickman has been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year’s Honours List.

Kevin co-founded the company in 1984 and remains a director and shareholder. He was recognised in the 2016 New Year’s Honours for his services to sport and to aged care.

Kevin said the award caught him by surprise.

“I was a bit shocked and then intrigued about the nomination. It has been hard keeping it secret, I’ve been looking forward to celebrating with my family.’’

“I’m humbled by the award, I’m proud of Ryman and the care we have provided for so many people, and of all the athletes I’ve coached over the years and what they have achieved.’’

Kevin has had a long involvement with New Zealand athletics, coaching athletes all the way to Olympic and Commonwealth Games level, and winning national recognition for his work.

“I like the process of developing people to realise their full potential. It’s a real challenge to get people to perform at the highest level, and much higher than they ever would have thought was possible. Seeing athletes win national recognition, and then head off overseas to compete at the highest level has given me great pleasure.’’

Kevin is also one of New Zealand’s most successful entrepreneurs. Ryman Healthcare was founded in 1984 with a $10,000 investment and has grown into a business valued at more than $4 billion.

The company has developed 30 villages which provide independent retirement living options as well as care for 9,000 residents in New Zealand and Australia.

The company has won dozens of awards over the years and provides jobs for 4,000 staff.

Ryman has provided for more than 30,000 New Zealanders over the years.

“When we started out we thought we could do provide a better standard of care than was being offered. We developed a sustainable model to be able to do that. I’m pleased with the way Ryman has continually got better and improved the lives of so many residents and their families. I’m also thrilled that the team we recruited in the early days is still there doing a great job.’’

Ryman managing director Simon Challies said it was a great recognition for Kevin’s work.

“We’re all chuffed for Kev and the recognition he’s got for his vision and all the hard work over the years. For me personally he has been a great coach and mentor and this recognises how much work he’s done for so many people.’’
