Sometimes watching a movie can be as educational as reading a book or listening to a lecture.

The Book Thief 

While subjected to the horrors of World War II Germany, young Liesel finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others. In the basement of her home, a Jewish refugee is being protected by her adoptive parents. 

Gandhi 

Gandhi, British-Indian historical film, released in 1982, that tells the story of Mahatma Gandhi and his struggle to win independence for India through nonviolent civil disobedience. 

Schindler’s List 

Schindler's List is based on the incredible true story Czech-born factory owner Oskar Schindler, who saved over 1,200 Jews from being sent to concentration camps during World War II. 

Sometimes in April 

A Hutu soldier (Idris Elba) tries to get his family to safety during the Rwandan genocide, while years later his brother stands trial for his actions. 

Water 

The concluding part of Deepa Mehta's `elemental' trilogy of dramas examines the plight of a group of widows in late 1930s India who are forced into poverty following the deaths of their husbands. Resigned to being ignored by society, one of them breaks ranks as she tries to strike up an unlikely relationship with a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. 

Castaway [available on Netflix] 

Obsessively punctual FedEx executive Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) is en route to an assignment in Malaysia when his plane crashes over the Pacific Ocean during a storm. The sole survivor of the flight, Chuck washes ashore on a deserted island. When his efforts to sail away and contact help fail, Chuck learns how to survive on the island, where he remains for years, accompanied by only his handmade volleyball friend, Wilson. Will Chuck ever return to civilization and reunite with his loved ones? 

To Kill a Mockingbird 

Scout Finch and her older brother, Jem, live in sleepy Maycomb, Alabama, spending much of their time with their friend Dill and spying on their reclusive and mysterious neighbour, Boo Radley. When Atticus, their widowed father and a respected lawyer, defends a black man named Tom Robinson against fabricated rape charges, the trial and tangent events expose the children to evils of racism and stereotyping.
