The WaterBoy charity

Hilda Ross residents were happy to finally meet a talented young sportsman that they have this year sponsored through Hamilton-based charity, The WaterBoy.
The residents did some fundraising in January then the charity group allocated some of the funds for the sporting needs of 15-year-old Karage Poihipi.

Those behind the WaterBoy say the charity breaks down barriers to give Kiwis an opportunity to participate in personal development activities.

The charity finds sponsors to support children who come from families that often cannot afford to pay for sports gear and fees for their child.

Hilda Ross Sales Advisor Trish de Jong said on Friday about 100 residents had the pleasure of meeting Karage, who was the recipient of a $1,200 of sponsorship funding. The meeting would have been earlier, but for the emergence of COVID-19 in March and the subsequent lockdown.

Residents at Hilda Ross and staff raised money at a charity dinner held at the beginning of the year. Then, they made contact with The WaterBoy charity.

“We were lucky to be paired up with Karage. He enjoys playing rugby for his school, which is Hamilton Boys High, as well as rugby league and drama,” Trish said.

“He is 15 years of age and was a delight to meet and take around to meet with the residents at Happy Hour … this is the first year we have sponsored a child. His name Karage is pronounced ‘Courage’… he showed courage to come and speak with all of us last Friday”

A group of residents were now looking to get along to a winter rugby game to watch him play, Trish said. Potentially Karage could get some part-time work at the village, she added.
