Around 60 residents from eight Auckland villages turned out for the first of four Walking for Wellness inter-village walks on Friday.

The sun made a special appearance too, which triggered the rare thrill of enjoying t-shirt weather in September!

The multi-village gatherings are a big highlight of the Walking for Wellness calendar, with residents describing how excited and pleased they were to be uniting again for the weekly events throughout the month of September.

The first walk took place at Cornwall Park, the regular walking location for our Logan Campbell residents, most of whom had walked from the village to be there.

Joining them were groups from Edmund Hillary, Grace Joel, Murray Halberg, Evelyn Page, William Sanders, Bruce McLaren and Miriam Corban.

The plan of attack was a clockwise loop around One Tree Hill, finishing back up at the café near the band rotunda for coffee and morning tea.

The idea of the Walking for Wellness challenge is to log regular walking distances using the End to End app, with the theme of the walk being Mt Everest.

The trip to the Everest Base Camp is 64.4km and, for the more adventurous, there is the option to do the return trip of 128.7km.

As each distance is logged, residents receive an update showing which landmarks they have passed along the way.

For the less tech-savvy residents there is also a paper-based option, with distances being logged manually.

Hot topics of discussion included the merits of completing the challenge in a matter of days, as some residents reportedly had, versus spreading the challenge out over the month.
