It’s no coincidence that our Edmund Hillary Village is named in honour of one of New Zealand’s most pioneering sons. As Ryman’s flagship village, it’s grand in appearance and set in prestigious Remuera amidst 25 acres of beautiful gardens. However, like our namesake, it also has a humble and caring side, because it’s a place where community and connection thrive.
At Edmund Hillary there’s a lifestyle option to suit everyone. You can choose from an independent apartment or the extra support of a serviced apartment. If your needs change over time, our state-of-the-art care centre provides 195 care rooms offering resthome, hospital and specialist dementia care.
Residents often tell us how proud they are to live at the village, whether they’ve lived in the surrounding suburbs all their lives or have moved there to retire. It’s evident in the enthusiasm residents bring to the many events and activities held at the village. They love the lifestyle because the village provides them with a supportive and caring place to call home, while offering the gateway to everything Remuera has to offer. It’s certainly a place where you can live life to the full.

Edmund Hillary Village offers living choices to suit everyone, so residents can live the way they want and blaze their own trails. Our one, two and three-bedroom apartments and two and three-bedroom townhouses are light and spacious, with clean lines and a clever open plan design layout that provides an easy flow throughout.
If down the track you need more support, we offer assisted living in a serviced apartment and a range of care options. That freedom and flexibility is empowering for residents and knowing care can be dialled up as needed means, quite simply, ‘no worries’. It's all part of what we like to call the Ryman Difference.
Our pioneering approach to retirement living includes resident-friendly terms designed to protect you and your family. Our base weekly fee is fixed for the entire time you occupy your apartment or townhouse*, and our deferred management fee is capped at 20 percent – one of the lowest in the retirement sector.
These are just some of the ways we’re pioneering a new way of living for a new retirement generation.
*Some conditions apply.

Care is not an ‘add on’ at a Ryman village, it is built into the fabric of our villages from the very beginning. It’s comforting for couples and friends to know they can still be near each other even if their health needs are different.
Edmund Hillary care centre offers a range of care options including resthome, hospital and specialist dementia care. Like all aspects of our villages, we constantly look for ways to improve both the care we provide and the innovation behind it. Care is customised using our myRyman care app and residents love the food in our seasonal Delicious menu, which is prepared fresh on site by village chefs.
Edmund Hillary is one of over 80 percent of Ryman villages that have been awarded 4-year certification by the Ministry of Health. It’s recognised as the ‘gold star’ standard in care.
Personal attention, warmth and building trusting relationships are all crucial to the customised care we provide at our care centres.

That’s why each Ryman village is named after a Kiwi or Aussie trailblazer. Anthony Wilding, Lady Diana Isaac, Evelyn Page to name a few. They lived with passion and purpose, they pushed further, they went beyond the ordinary. That’s exactly what we strive to do every day at Ryman. To pioneer a new way of living, for a new retirement generation.
In 1953, New Zealander Sir Edmund (Ed) Hillary was the first mountaineer to reach the summit of Mount Everest. In recognition, he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
Following this feat, Ed climbed another 10 Himalayan mountain peaks among many other expeditions. An adventurer to his core, he reached the South Pole in 1958 and the North Pole in 1985. The latter was achieved in partnership with astronaut Neil Armstrong. Ed’s relentless determination in the face of adversity resulted in him being the first man to climb Mount Everest and reach both the North and South Poles.
In the years after his Everest success, Ed’s primary agenda was the wellbeing of the Nepalis, specifically the Sherpas. Seven years after his famed ascent he founded the Himalayan Trust which provided airfields, hospitals, and schools in remote areas of Nepal. In 2003 he was made an honorary citizen of Nepal.
Sir Ed was a modest, humble man and is the face of New Zealand’s $5 note. In 2008, his life achievements were acknowledged by New Zealand with a state funeral.
A biography Edmund Hillary by Kevin Boon was published in 1991. Five years later, Sir Edmund Hillary: Everest and Beyond written by Whitney Stewart was published.
