Rita Angus has been acclaimed by art critics as one of the major figures in contemporary New Zealand art.


During the 1930’s and 1940’s, she painted in Otago, Canterbury, Nelson, Wellington and the Hawkes Bay. From 1955, Rita’s permanent home was in Wellington, where she worked from her Thorndon cottage.


In 1958, Rita Angus was awarded an Association of New Zealand Art Societies Fellowship to study in Europe.
