Grace Joel, a well-known New Zealand painter.

History

Grace Joel was an early New Zealand painter. She studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne and was also taught by Italian artist Girolam Nerli. It is also believed that she was a pupil of Renoir. Her paintings were regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the Societe des artistes Francois in Paris. One of her best known paintings was entitled “Self Portrait, wearing a Hat.”
