Anthony Wilding 1883 – 1915
Anthony Wilding was a champion tennis player and courageous soldier killed in action during World War 1.Wilding first gained international prominence by representing Australisia and winning the Davis Cup in 1907, 1908, and 1909. He won the Australian Open singles in 1906, 1909 and at his peak, won Wimbledon Championships Singles title for four consecutive years between 1910 and 1913.
Anthony Wilding was a successful and popular figure on the World tennis circuit and was New Zealand's first true World Champion on the International sporting stage.
