Dunedin Southern Sinfonia featuring the life of Frances Hodgkins

The Southern Sinfonia held recently in Dunedin celebrated Otago’s heritage and the life of Frances Hodgkins. Curator and writer Jody Dalgleish began with an enlightening journey though Hodgkins life and travels, with paintings and archive photos screened overhead, and then the Sinfonia conducted by Marc Taddei launched into Onward Otago by Raffaello Squarise, an Italian musician prominent in Otago’s musical history. Two songs from Deborah Wai Kapohe, by Canteloube marked Hogdkins’ sojourns to paint in France, and vibrant colourful orchestral works by De Falla and Stravinsky touched on Spain and other influences. This was a wonderful night and Ryman Healthcare was proud to be the main sponsor for what was a great tribute to Frances Hodgkins’ life.
